Anybody know of a cheap and cheerful Hosting company?
26.September, 2009
Hi, I recently signed up for a domain and hosting from a company called UK Web but they took my money and ran and didnt even register my domain. Im looking for a cheap hosting service to include purchase of a .co.uk domain name its only for a couple of simple pages. A website design wizard would be brilliant too. Who do you use? Thatnks in advance.
p.s. it needs to be a UK site, so I can buy a .co.uk domain and pay in sterling thanks!
I use Portland.co.uk who have a package for £11.99 a year, then you just need to pay the ragistration fee for your domain. I’ve been with them for several years, so I don’t think they’ll take your money and run.
How can i get someone to design my website for free?
26.September, 2009
Would like it quite professional nothing too flashy, but competent. We’re a new business and we have no capital for good webdesign, maybe we can offer something like their name advertised at the bottom "webdesign by…." or maybe there is a charity that would do it for us! please help!!!
"Website designed by" is standard even when paying for a site. Normally a client pays more to remove it.
I would say you need another small company and give them large adspace they can resell… otherwise, it will cost you for professional development.
You get what you pay for.
what is a cheap yet, good website design software for a beginner?
26.September, 2009
I have a little knowledge of html but not much. I am looking to design a small business website (no buying or selling, just info). I have heard that there is good software out there that takes the html knowledge out of it but they are expensive. I want a relatively inexpensive one to start out with., but I want to be able to make the website look nice and original, not cookie-cutterish.
Please, oh please, do not use Micro$oft anything for making a web page. You may have FrontPage extensions problems on some hosting sites.
Since you are a newbie, I recommend you start off using a free WYSIWYG Editor like NVU (http://nvudev.com/index.php). Once you learn HTML and CSS, you can still use this editor in Code View mode. Some other good free editors are:
Matrix Y2K 2005 and AceHTML 6 Pro. You can Google for these.

How much should I expect to pay for a web designer to design me a custom MT or Drupal template?
26.September, 2009
We need a content management website that visually captures our brand image. I am going through freelancer sites such as Elance to find a web designer who do design for Drupal or MT. I am trying to get accurate expectations on how much it would cost.
I don’t need to go beyond the core modules of Drupal (or functions of MT), I just need to give it a makeover.
As a ballpark figure, it could be from $100 to $500 depending on how fancy your requirements are (especially if any interactive features like Flash or AJAX are involved).
I highly recommend posting your project on Rent-a-Coder. It’s free and does not obligate you to accept ANY bid you receive on your project. You’ll then have a much better idea of what people would be willing to work for.
What is the proper way to learn web design?
26.September, 2009
I’ve been learning to design websites for a while now but I was just wondering what sort of thing am I going to need to know to get into the industry? HTML? CSS? anything else? and does anyone know any universitys (in the UK) that run a web design course?
some of the languages to help you enhance the website…shockwave, PHP, Javascript, XHTML, Pearl, there are a bunch of things that you can learn…take classes at your local comunity college..a lot cheaper

HTML website templates can significantly ease the burden of designing and creating websites by providing webmasters with a ready-made web layout, structure, basic graphics, and color scheme. Templates can generally be edited and customized with any HTML editor. The biggest advantage for webmasters using ready-made templates is the amount of time that can be saved. There are a number of websites that provide ready-made HTML templates. We have compiled a list of some popular sites to make the search process easier.
This article details a number of other sites that have HTML Web Templates available – http://www.small-business-software.net/html-web-templates.htm
Some advice on forming a web-design company in the UK ?
25.September, 2009
I’m not from the UK, and I would like to form a web-design company based in the UK. I would really appreciate some advice about the papers needed from someone who has done this or something similar. Will I need to have a physical headquarters, or can I use the address from my home country (in the EU) ? How much (approximately) will all the paperwork and approvals cost ? Any othe advice is welcome.
I would suggest that you try the official business link for the Uk.
http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/home.
You should be able to do your business using your physical address in the EU.
I would consult your local business authorities as well. They should be able to provide you with helpful info as well.
BEST WISHES!
I’m a silversmith/jewelry designer. Can I sell on Blogger? How do I add my company to search engines?
25.September, 2009
I have a Yahoo 360 page listed under Jessica Dow, which is open to the public. Somone with experience might get a better idea of the best market for my work after seeing some examples. I also have links there to on-line portfolios and my new BLOGGER page ( which has some larger pictures of my custom work). I already have a few things on eBAY, on a trial basis. But I don’t think eBAY is the right place for work such as mine. Any advice would be very helpful. I’m planning on starting a professional web-site, but most of the web-site designers I’ve seen charge prices currently not within my budget. I know there are site-builders, but I don’t want a cheap knock off design ( template ) for my site. I want my site to reflect the same quality and beauty as the work I sell there. If that means I have to wait to hire a high priced professional, I’ll do that. I’d appreciate hearing of any other options.
That’s a good idea–I’d first thoroughly read Blogger’s TOS (Terms of Service), their rules, etc. To make sure, I’d e-mail them (there’s most likely a contact link somewhere on the website) asking about your business and your ideas to sell on Blogger. It doesn’t seem necessary, but imagine your site being shut down to all the customers and the consequences of breaking the rules (if there are any against it, that is).
As for getting it noticed, a good first step is to get a ‘dot-tk’. Basically, you pick a URL for your website (like mydesgins.tk). After that, you submit your Blogger URL, and anyone who types the URL from .tk is will be redirected to your site. So if they type in mydesigns.tk, that will be the URL in the bar, but your Blogger will load. It does have one page of advertisments beore redirecting, but it allows you to put in keywords to help people find your site on search engines. Even if no one uses the .tk URL, just having your site up on search engines is a benefit itself!
As for a professional website design–I’ll make you one, free-of-charge. No links, nothing. I know, coming from someone you hardly know (and for free), it sounds like I wouldn’t be able to do a quality job, but I will–I’ll do it because I enjoy it. Contact me with details if you want me to make a layout, good luck with selling!
