Currently I play in the Automotive Paint Sector and own a company called Brushless Colors. I am in the process of selling off the company, not the name, and am merging over into the Web Design sector for a career.

Currently I have Blue Ice Studio as a business name but just don’t seem like I get much enthusiasm over the name when I say it to others.

Which do you like better for a Web Design Company name?

- Blue Ice Studio

- Brushless Colors

Some are just telling me to keep my original name cause it fits the web design part as well. Maybe you have another name that you think might work better….mention it if you would.
I already own both dot coms.

I think web design is chock full of competition these days, and some have a lot of skills in database design and interfacing to back office systems. So this will be challenging.

Yeah, Business Colors may not cut the mustard.

You could just always use your own name, like "Smith Business Designs".

I would like to see your website and how much you paid for it including all graphic design , domain , hosting , the whole works. I also would like to know if the website you have is one that is designed professionally or a package you bought into and designed yourself. If your site was designed professionally also please tell me if you paid for the project as a whole or if you paid hourly rates or by the pages and what the cost of each of those were. I know that is a lot but with the economy the way it is right now , my girlfriend who I share expenses with just had to take a 400 dollar cut in pay , and so I really need to start rounding up more customers for my web design business , but my rates were never really set before , I just was cheap to help out who ever I was making the website for , now I need to be realistic …so please help.
Thanks in Advance

Thanks for your answer but , I already know how to do all that stuff , I am asking this question as a web designer … wondering how much I should charge my customers.

Mine’s probably average, so you don’t necessarily need to see it: I did it myself. Domain name registration: $8 per year (cost of a paperback book!) Domain hosting, $145 for 3-year commitment. Cheap, and a good company.

I bought Photoshop ($700 or so) for graphics, and BBedit ($125) for code building. You could buy, or get free, different software for the same stuff (GIMP for graphics is free and Notepad++ for code-building is free, for two examples).

I bought a dozen or so reference books at a fair price so I don’t have to go online to look stuff up all the time: does that count as an expense? How about the laptop itself. My time?

I charge $45 per hour. Consulting after the first hit is chargeable: I learned that, after the first job, where the client spent more time "consulting" than I spent "doing". I also go for a one-hour minimum, for those cases in which clients keep calling up for a "oh, this’ll only take you five minutes" shot.

I know that many pros use CS4, which includes Photoshop and also Dreamweaver (automated website creator and Flash and all the slick things…and quite a bit of learning involved, of course). But that booger is expensive, and of course, the cost would have to be passed on and parceled out, no?

I am starting a web design business and am going to register my domain name. I have been told that I should have the words "webdesign" in my domain name.

For example, if my design company will be called "Blue Monkey", I’m told my main domain name should be "bluemonkeywebdesign.com" rather than just "bluemonkey.com"

Does anyone agree or disagree with this thinking? I was all set to just buy the domain name without the "webdesign" part because I thought the shorter it is, the better it is.

Any thoughts?

Same here, short and sweet. People giving you that advice should stop reading articles from 1995.

I bought my domain name through citysearch, but their website design tools suck! Is there a free service like yahoo domains or google pages that will allow me to edit/design my domain that through them?

I have JUST decided that I want to become a Web Designer/Developer.
I already have a good idea of what I need to do but I need reassurance from the yahoo answers community.
If you can list any tips or things I should know I will appreciate it very much.
Thanks!

Adobe are giving away their Flex application to students.

There are lots of good video tutorials on Flex and Flash.
You could watch a tutorial and make a decision after that.

Here is one such site: http://www.lynda.com/

I’m a web design student, but my web design skills aren’t advanced enough to do the web design all by myself.

But I have good experience in Sales and I know that I’ll be able to get business quickly. Can you still make money if you get someone else to do the designing, and I’ll just be soliciting business?

What problems can I experience with this business model?

I’ve been a self-employed software engineer for a looong time, and I read several times about other self-employed software engineers that were based in the USA, managed to get contracts there, and let the actual software-development be done by people in India.

If it can be done by a software engineer, I don’t see why you can’t do it as a web designer. Just make sure the contracts you have with your designers are at least as strict as the ones you have with your customers, to minimize your risks.

e-commerce payment options?

25.October, 2009

what are my options for taking payment from my online store. The web design company have recommended i choose ‘Paypal’, which charges 3.9% per transaction. I will be trading from the UK, are there other less expensive alternatives?

cheers all.

We’ve used Paypal for some time now but found that they do not accept payments in excess of £650 unless the customer has a Paypal account. As a business, this is not satisfactory for us. We’re now in the process of switching to Netbanx. Their transaction fee is less than Paypal’s but they have a minimum rate per month of £20 so, if your transactions are low you have to pay that whatever happens.

If your customers are unlikely to be spending over £650 at a time, Paypal is a good solution. There are other providers who make you wait a long time for your money. With Paypal, your money is moved to your own/business bank account within 5-7 working days. Netbanz is within 14 days, I think, and some of the others take over a month.

Good luck!

I want to find a web design template that allows for a user network where people can sign in and share photos with eachother. Preferably in "What you see is what you get format", WYSIWYG, format.

Having just a template won’t do a thing. You have to know programming, design, and how to maintain (both web traffic and updates)/secure. Its called a social network.
