If you’re an experienced web designer how long would it take you to make a website if the customer already had the css and index.html but just needed 3-5 more linking pages, one of which would be a contact us form?

About an hour or two depending on the quality ofthe template

I want to be able to fix computer problems and also do web design to the extent where I can do them as a job. What is the best way to go about learning this? Are there any online programs or guide that are particularly helpful? I don’t care about the price.

Or would you recommend some other way to learning?

Well i have a few options to your dream here as an experienced designer, developer, & entrepreneur. U have that entrepreneur spirit and thats a good thing, but remember you will need a good strategy to make these dreams come true.

First, U must understand each field…as there is a path to your goals, whether its web design or computer repair. To first understand this, you must know web design is completely different from computer repair, and u rarely see someone do both unless they are a true nerd at this.

Web design requires software skills, analytical thinking, and learning codes that are changing rapidly. Computer repair is more technical, like fixing a car, where the hardware is most important. A computer problem needing repair usually only involves a hand ful of possible problems, from hard drive, mother board, or mite just need the operating system reloaded, which brings u back to software. For people who don’t know about computers, they will pay alot just to get their computer back together, however, the falling prices of new computers puts this in risk.

Now to tackle your dream, you can find helpful resources online to learn how to web design. From html for starters, to java, php, or joomla. These are most popular, but basic html can really be done in a software program such as NVU, microsoft expression web, or others, some are free at download.com or microsoft offers trials. For computer repair, u must attend community college at least or like reading online and practicing on old computers. I learned from a technician teaching me and got pretty good in just 1 month of watching & listening. Laptop repair will become more popular and not every computer shop know how to fix these things as they’re more complex. To sum it up, web design will take u a few weeks and computer repair will determine how much u get from your source of information, but usually a few months.

Now if u have more money than time, you may find shortcuts, but some learning can’t be rushed as it’s necessary for these skills. For more business consulting and mentoring, I’ll have to charge a small fee starting at $25, but it’ll be worth every penny to know the ropes online & ways to start small but profitable.

am student (Web Design) and I have just started to build my Portfolio. Everything has been going really great – but now I have an Ecommerce site and I am in way over my head. Initially, the client was going to be selling a few items, and just wanted a shopping cart. Now, it has turned into a full blown ecommerce site. He wants buyers to be able to create a login that will remember their credit card information, he wants to accept all major credit cards apart from Paypal, and he wants to transactions to be processed instantly. Basically he wants amazon.com. I know that this is where I need to learn PHP and My SQL. Here is my dilemma – do I back out now and give him his money back, or do I push through? I have looked at store "templates" but there doesn’t seem to be anything I can integrate into my site. ANY suggestions would be VERY MUCH appreciated.

Do yourself a favor and pick someone who also knows about marketing. A lot of web designers charge an arm and a leg for a site and then it doesn’t do anything to help the business owner put extra money in their bank account. So what’s the point? "Build It And They Will Come" does not apply here.

No point in spending hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dollars for a website if no one is able to find it.

This is why it’s important to work with someone who knows about marketing as well.

Few tips for your site….use an opt in form to grab your visitors contact email. Use an autoresponder service like Aweber for this. This way you can communicate with past and potential customers whenever you want.

Also be sure to put a call to action on every page of your site. People are lazy. You need to tell them exactly what you want them to do next. Whether it’s call you, email you, come into your store, whatever. Just get them to take the next step.

Also, be sure to include the most important info above the fold (what the visitors see without having to scroll).

Oh, and try to avoid flash. Web designers LOVE flash because it looks pretty. But, it slows down loading times and people have little patience, especially online. All they have to do is hit the back button and you lost them forever.

after doing this for a number of years it really got to the stage where it was cheaper to buy computers that were already well spec’d, plus you get a warranty covering everything.
