Is it necessary to be artistic to be a web designer?
31.January, 2010
How necessary is it to be artistic to qualify for web design? I am creative but lack artistic skills such as drawing, painting etc. I have designed web sites before and they were very presentable. As an official full-time web designer, how important would it be to be artistic, or would i be able to get by?
I think being ‘creative’ helps, as well as knowing code and having a grasp of design. Drawing and painting are not necessary as much as design is. I am a fine artist that learned design and I’m a multimedia designer (including web). Knowing design software; Photoshop, Illustrator, ImageReady/fireworks and being able to create images; buttons, backgrounds, banner ads, etc. doesn’t have much to do with painting per se.
Knowing artist tools and techniques -and- being able to code does put you in a unique position though and makes your skill set more attractive.
The less a ‘job’ (web design in this case) has to be piece milled out because you can only provide a portion of the required work, the better.
Having creative ‘hand skills’; drawing and painting, goes a long way.
e-commerce web design?
27.January, 2010
I run a web design company and i regularly get clients asking about e-commerce sites, i’m not sure how to do them yet so i have come here to ask.
do web designers out there just get an open source ecommerce software and edit the themes to integrate into a clients website or do they build their own?
how should i go about offering ecommerce, and what should i use software wise
Thanks
As said above, but free e-commerce scripts are usually full of bugs.
Large systems, like Joomla, Drupal, Miva or Os-commerce are very complex to use and have HUUUGE amount of stuff you will never need (install 26mb!).
I personally find them a total waste of time.
Here are the basic specs of simple e-commerce:

Is there a diffrence between a web designer and a web developer?
27.January, 2010
I ask this because i thought there was but people seem to use the words interchangeably even on job adverts.
I thought a designer dealt with the coding of web pages and the layout and that a developer did stuff like dynamic and database.
Actually i just read in a book that these 2 roles are becoming increasingly combined maybe that’s why i was confused.
The Definition of Web Design (Designer)
Web design typically refers to the process of designing a web site or web page layout and often includes the graphical elements on a page. The design can be developed using a graphics program such as Adobe Photoshop, and provides the framework for the look and feel of a web page.
The finished product of the design does not typically contain code. Rather, the graphical representation of the web page is used by another or the same party as the basis for the code. The representation is divided into areas that can be represented by web code, and other areas that are purely graphics.
Often, web design and development firms use the term "web design" to refer to the entire development of a web site because it is the most commonly recognized term in the marketplace. However, it is important to clarify what a firm means before signing up for their "web design" services.
The Definition of Web Development (developer)
Web development is typically used to described the programming required to construct the "back end" of a website. The back end is the area of the site that isn’t seen by visitors, but which does the work required in order to present the right information in the correct format to the visitors.
Web development is used to describe any database-driven web designs using dynamic scripting languages like PHP, ASP, ASP.NET and Coldfusion. It also covers database design and development. The term can also be used for client-side scripting such as JavaScript and Java.
How I get site links in Google search?
17.January, 2010
Hi, to all http://pravalikadesigns.com this is my site. when I search "Pravalikadesigns" in Google I am getting homepage link only how I can get sub links followed by home page…
Link this..
Pravalika Designs http://pravalikadesigns.com ….
"SEO" "Web Hosting"
"Web Design" "E-Commerce" ……
Can any body help me how I can get like above….
Well congrats. You have done it. A back link from a site like this will get you listed pretty darn quickly. Now that it’s up…just as long as you don’t get booted…you should be listed in under 4 days. My last site was listed in Google in under 3 just by having a back link on here. But maybe you already knew that…..hmmm.
Can I send subliminal messages through a web site design?
17.January, 2010
Heh…I made a template design that can be used on a site by altering the images of a bunch of hot women till you can’t tell the images I used were originally pics of women. Do you think I would be sending out subliminal messages by using it? That was the motive, to have some geek on a computer thinking, "Oh, I don’t know what it is about this site, but it’s turning me on."
I think your question should be put in the Psychology column.
Short answer: there is no such thing as subliminal messaging. Advertising and such are meant to create conscious reactions to buy their product, so trying to induce conscious reactions with unconscious stimulus is contradictory in itself. Even so, if subliminal messaging is truly subliminal, we would have no idea of it even existing nor its effects, which is a waste of time.
There are a lot of studies showing that "subliminal messaging" does not work. If you’re trying to get somebody horny, just post pictures of naked women.
Basic info for a small Computer Services and Web design company?
17.January, 2010
I just started a small computer services and web design company in Florida
I want to know the following
- Does the company charge taxes to customers for the computer services or web design? What kinds of taxes?
- Where is a good place to get templates of contracts for these specific kind of jobs?
- Is it a good idea to put myself as a employee of my own company? this company is a LLC. or just to take out money from the business bank account as "member retribution"
-Can you recommend good books about this matter?
thank you for your time

Awesome, I’m so happy with mine. Mine looked brand spanking new. Very fast, the battery does last only 1 1/2 hours, but I got an extra battery for $65 on eBay used and it works nicely. Came with Vista, but I put WinXP on mine and found all the drivers on the internet. The construction is very sturdy hard plastic, none of the cheap flimsy stuff. Overall the value is great, it feels and looks more durable than laptops of the past, and is fast. Great buy.

I bought this laptop a week ago.and received it Wednesday. Excellent condition, I would have thougt I just picked it up at a store. My only problem was when I allowed Norton Internet Security to load (60 day trial)and then brought up the internet, half way through loading, the system locked up. The only way to free it up was to manualy power down. I unistalled Norton and installed AVG Free. NO more problems !!!! This is a very fast easy to use laptop with all the bells and whistles. Also very fast shipping,3 days. VERY HAPPY

i bought the T1625 which is essentially the same specs as this, and wanted to input the impression i drew from the t1625. first off, great price, amazing features, and with a laptop cooler running $40 dollars for a middle of the road model, this laptop will run cool [the only complaint i have found on these was the heat] and you will have picked yourself up a top with features running in some cases nearly twice as much in price of a non refurbs, which will only be the refurbs of tomorrow. run all the updates through gateway, and do a clean reinstall and pertition reformat when you unpack, it, it will take a little bit of time, but will point you in a much faster direction. this laptop is highly recomended in my opinion.

This is my first purchase from TD.com, and I’m very satisfied with it. The Turion 64 dualcore processor and the 2GB of RAM make short work of everything I throw at it; I have Pidgin (my IM client), Firefox (with 3 tabs open, including YouTube), LimeWire, and uTorrent all running at the same time and there is absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. My only gripes are that it gets a little bit hot when charging, and the battery only lasts for an hour and a half; I can deal with heat and the battery can be easily upgraded. The only thing you have to worry about with refurbished products is the look, not performance; Mine came with a small scratch in the top of the case, but performs like a champ. If you don’t mind some minor cosmetic flaws, I’d definitely recommend this computer to anyone on a budget, especially at this price!

Shared Memory? Or Where Did My Memory Go?
Your computer uses memory to run your Operating System, applications, peripherals, and to generate and display graphics on your computer monitor. Video memory is a form of RAM, and is either built into your motherboard; or on a graphics card (video card). Depending on the motherboard’s configuration, and that of the video card (if separate or built-in to the motherboard), your computer may have to draw on its own RAM memory to meet its video memory needs. This creates shared memory, where your computer’s RAM will be shared between its own Processor (CPU) and its graphics chip.
The result is that some systems will have shared memory, some will not. If you have 2GB (for example) of system memory installed, you may notice that your system reports significantly less memory. This is because your system is using shared memory for your video.
What can you do about this?
You can actually configure this shared memory through your computer’s BIOS settings. However, this is a setting best left alone, since it is typically optimized for display performance, and making changes may impact display resolutions, and other video capabilities.
The simplest solution is usually to either: increase your system memory; or to upgrade the video hardware. By upgrading to a new video card with built-in video memory, then turning off shared memory, you will free your system to use it’s maximum potential memory, and provide your system with much more robust video features.

How Much Memory Do You Really Have?
When you look at the specifications for a computer, it will display the installed memory, and typically the maximum memory that can be installed. However, while these are real values, they represent a potential useable memory. The actual useable memory may be different from these values. The reason is simply that a computer may configured to use shared memory, which reduces the amount of RAM that is available to the CPU by using some of it for other purposes, such as for video memory. In some cases, you can control the maximum useable memory through system settings, and by upgrading to a video card that has internal onboard video memory.
But always remember, that the amount of memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed memory. If you find that you need more memory, we suggest expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance increase, and the one that is easiest to perform .

I use to own a web design company
I still have several managed servers.
Tough biz to be in but I found it much better to use my local market to build my client list.
while I did have a site for other www business
people just like to see who there doing business with…
maybe it’s more like thay like having a phone number and a face they can yell at when something doesnt go the way the want.
What is an easy but proffesional software for website design?
17.January, 2010
Since I am not a web designer what I need is just one friendly tool to design my own website, something which contains maybe a gallerie with predesigned templates, video tutorials etc. It should support Greek Language for the website. Payment is not a problem since you can’t have it all…
I haven’t tried it because I use a more advance program to create my websites (Adobe Dreamweaver) but Intuit websites looks like a fairly easy program (website) to use to create a webpage. http://www.intuit.com/website-building-software/
Is being a free lance web designer a a good career choice?
17.January, 2010
I’m getting my associates in Web Production and Design, and I would like to know (hopefully from other web designers) if being a free lance web designer is working out well for you guys. I mean, I wouldn’t mind working for a company of some sort, but honestly I would like the freedom to call my own shots. Thanks!
Free lance means you are responsible for all of the business side things like ensuring your Federal, Social Security and State taxes are paid out of your gross income, paying health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance and any other financial considerations. Health insurance alone will end up costing a lot more than if you were on a company policy (at my last job I paid $65 a month for full medical & dental a comparable plan would cost me $2000/month). Not only that but most tech companies will provide 401K with matching funds (which is free money) as well as educational benefits/paid training and conferences as well as even match funds for any charitable organization donations you make.
Just something to consider.
