I would like to make an e-commerce website and instead of paying someone thousands of dollars to build it I would like to build it myself. I’ve always wanted to learn web design but I’m already going to college for something else. What do I need to learn to be able to design a great website? What programing languages do I need to learn? Any books that you recommend?

You’d want to take a look at these:

1. HTML and CSS, XML
for your actual web pages– the things that will show stuff to people who visit your website.

For this, I recommend "XHTML Complete" from Sybex, the book covers CSS also.

2. MySQL (or some other SQL variant)
for getting various data in and out of a database.

3. PHP (or another server-side language like Python or Perl)
for interfacing your HTML and CSS with your database/s– getting stuff from a database, like products and the corresponding price, and automatically writing HTML for that stuff.

For 2. and 3., frequent visits to http://www.php.net will be very helpful.

Also, installing a (Apache, Php, MySQL) web server in your computer will be necessary. Don’t worry, it’s just a small thing. I’ve heard good things about this, if you have a Windows box: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Of course, there are other web servers available out there. But they cost a lot of money.

4. (optional) JavaScript
for adding bells and whistles to your HTML and CSS.

5. (optional) Flash and ActionScript
for more bells and whistles.

On top of your college work, this may seem to be a bit daunting. But hey, I’m self-taught too.

Cheers! :)

E-Commerce hosting question?

21.September, 2009

Hi. I have a question about e-commerce hosting.

If I have the front-end code ready to go for an e-commerce site (html pages of products, etc) is there any host that allows me to easily plug in my code to the e-commerce software they provide with the hosting package?

I checked with 1and1.com but they said I have to use their template if I want to use the eShop package they provide. (I can place my own logo, header, etc into the template, but I cannot modify the design to make my own).

So, here are the questions:
1. If I want to use my own design / template, what’s the best way to go about creating an e-commerce website? Are there any web hosting company that provides means to plug in my template into their e-commerce web hosting package?

2. My design is similar to "http://www.coach.com/default.aspx"
Is there any web host that provides similar looking template as coach.com?

Detailed explanation on how I can go about doing this would be greatly appreciated.

You may review list of top ten web hosting at website like http://aplis.net/ , you may also contact a web developer at website like http://definitivelab.com/ to help you code a web template simmilar to coach.com .

I want to design a simple e-commerce web page and I want it to send me and email and notify me on new orders but i don’t know how to do it is there any way to do this? please pay attention that i don’t want to send an html email, I want my web page send me an email.

Try setting up a form, where information is submitted and then e-mailed to you. Pretty easy to do–here’s a tutorial on HTML code for forms:

http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_forms.asp

and sample code for a simple form:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_form_mail

good luck!

cheers!

I’m thinking about purchasing Coffee Cup web designing to design an e-commerce website. Has anybody ever used them? Would you mind putting a link to your website so I can see what it looks like?
Thanks!

Let me tell you a story. {Sits in rocking chair, lights pipe}.

Long long ago in a far distant galaxy (Farnborough in my case), We were on our Linux servers, bulletin boards had been going for quite some time, but then there was a strange phenomenum, out of knowhere lots of people wanted to be able to communicate through bulletin boards and then it built into ‘page of presence’ web sites. Was a bit like pulling a cork out of a dam, the water would sort of trickle through as if it wasn’t sure it was allowed, then once it knew it could make a bit for freedom it poured through and drenched your pants.

At that time UNIX was the only host, it was also the only OS that had applications for web pages. Editors and server systems.

Windows was starting to take off, but it had nothing for the web page design nor did it have a means of getting a page onto a server.

That is when coffeecup was born. It provided early day html editors for windows clients and it provided ftp clients so they could publish their pages.

What I am telling you is that Coffeecup has been in this business since the very early days. They extended their range of products and services over all of these years. You can trust them, you also get great support, because they are not just foreign folk in a call center somewhere, when you talk to coffeecup you are talking to real techies who have been doing this for many years.

I mainly work on web stuff from Linux, so I have no need of coffeecup, but if I had to work on Windows with Windows tools, then they would be first on my list for design tools (them and Netbeans).

Darn it, me pipe had gone out.

I’m interested in E-commerce and Web Design. I researched those professions listed above and they all seem to perform practically the same duties. I might be wrong, so I’m hoping to find some light here. Does anybody know the differences between the three professions? I would prefer facts rather than opinions.
Thank you in advance!

A web software specialist will create software in web languages like PHP, Perl, or Rails to later be deployed on one or more sites.

A web developer builds a website’s coding, but unlike a software writer his work is exclusive to one site.

A web master often does the work of a web developer, but is the overall head of the website, and oversees all of everything else too (web design, server setup, etc.),

So far that I know of are

Legal
Web designing (Not going to do it all myself)
Domain Name
Web Hosting
It is an advertising business basically.

Accounting

Any staff besides you?

Inventory – are you re-selling any products?

Obviously a computer, printer, fax, office supplies, filing cabinets.

Banking – service charges, cheques

Are you renting/buying or doing it out of your house? – Utilities (hydro, gas, internet, phone), if you are a different location everything down to toilet paper.

I am building a store on a hosted server. I am building all of the informational things myself, but I’m not really experienced enough to be able to design a reliable shopping cart system.

What are some good and reliable shopping carts that I can integrate into my site? What are your personal preferences?

BTW, I tried doing it through Yahoo, and hated Yahoo, so I’m doing it (other than the shopping cart) from the ground up this time.

Thanks!

I know at work we recommend OS commerce. I haven’t used it personally though.
