Web design companies earning $750,000 – $5,000,000 a year, so the midsize to large companies, not the freelancers and small shops.
With the current economic climate the work that these companies do can potentially dry up. Since these companies will probably be working with larger clients rather then the smaller "ma & pa" companies.
Larger companies are tightening their belt right now, so any smaller projects where these companies can save money will either be cut or not started at all. Larger companies can afford to cut smaller project (<3million) as they will be able to survive without them and it will let them save some money quickly. They can’t afford to cut larger projects as the investments are too large to justify it.
You can see how this puts web design companies that do projects worth less than millions into a bad position.

11.October, 2009
I’m located in San Jose, and I’d lke to start a web design business. What kind of paperwork would I have to fill out and where could I find it? Also how would I go about writing off things for the business? Thanks!

How important is the Maya software for web design?
11.October, 2009
I’m in Interactive Media, and I am going to learn Maya. I looked up the software online and it’s very expensive over $500.00.
I am going specifically for web design because I like designing and making pages. I need to know this because I want to know which software I will need to buy for homework and a future career. My school has a deal with Adobe for students. $237 for Flash, Dream Weaver, Fireworks and Contribute.
The Adobe Web Suite for students is an ideal package for you to purchase. The application bundled with it are used a great deal in the web design industry.
Other products are also available, but most don’t have the market share as the Adobe suite.
Maya is not used for web design, but is used to make 3D style graphics. Though 3D graphics are popular, they make up very little of the total number of images used in general web design.
What is the best way to learn about Web Design & Digital Media?
07.October, 2009
Hi all, I would love to get into Web design & digital media and I was wondering what was the best way to learn how to use industry standard software such as: Dreamweaver, Flash & Photoshop in order for me to fulfill that interest?
I’m going to assume that when you say digital media you’re referring to creative content made on the computer. The best way to get into web design and digital media is to set a solid foundation.
For both, you will need to develop your design sense. This comes though exposure, experience, or study. I suggest that you take a basic class in graphic design through a continuing education program at a local college. This is better than sitting at home by yourself muddling through, because classmates and instructors will present new viewpoint, challenge your ideas, and provide dialogue. After the introduction with the graphic design class you can go into a web design class.
With web design it is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL to start with a firm understanding of the basics. Learn how to script with HTML and CSS in a text editor first before creating websites in software like Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc. Once you get the basics under your belt you will be able to wield the software in more powerful ways. You will also need Photoshop to create graphic assets for your websites.
Software depends on personal preference, clients, and employer, but the major software packages that you’ll do well to learn include, Photoshop (image manipulation and creation), Illustrator (illustrations), Indesign (print design), Flash (animation and interactive media), After Affect (motion graphics), or Premiere (video editing). For the technical and software side of the disciplines, again nothing beats a class, but there are plenty of resources online, on cds, as well as in books.
http://www.webmonkey.com is a great resource for web scripting. http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp is dense for a beginner but is more comprehensive.
If you have the money but you don’t have the time for class take a look at http://www.lynda.com/ for excellent tutorials that will get you up to speed easily and quickly.
For a beginner learning software I suggest not going online. Books are a cheap and great starting point, because they will provide you with structured learning. I recommend the Visual Quick Start series published by Peachpit Press. They will walk you through step by step with illustrations and lessons. Once you have gotten enough basics to start creating your first website O’Reilly publishes excellent references. Check out "Web Design in a Nutshell." If you’re feeling a bit artsy and want to learn about the larger context of the digital realm read "Digital Art" by Christiane Paul.
GOOD LUCK!!
How do I develop a compelling Web Design portfolio from scratch? Or do I get a job to get the portfolio going?
07.October, 2009
I am a recent college graduate with a major in internet web design. I consider myself an intermediate level developer, but I just don’t know where to start with a portfolio! Every time I apply for a job, I get kicked to the curb by more advanced people with great portfolios. And how do I get one going if I don’t have one in the first place? Suggestions?
Try doing some pro bono work for some organizations around your local community. They’ll be a pain to get through, but a good way to get your portfolio going. Same with family and friends or market to small local businesses. You could also create websites for yourself about things you like and/or hobbies.
I’m an experienced freelance web designer and I’m going to start teaching web design at a small computer center. If I teach using Dreamweaver, I’m afraid the students will not bother to learn up HTML. But if I teach html and css coding with notepad, it seems to difficult or too tedious for beginners ?
Sometimes Dreamweaver will screw up – for example you make a selection in design view and it will grab part of a closing tag.
Because of this I like to work in split view. You should demonstrate this so they understand why it’s important to know the tags. Also demonstrate how copying text or code from a web page can lead to problems unless you paste into notepad first.
