What are the major things that a web designer should know/have a good understanding of (for example programming languages or Photoshop)? Should I get started on my portfolio now? I am a sophomore in high school (10th grade). And what electives should I be taking?
Also, how is the pay for a web designer (both free lance and one assigned to a company)

The first thing to consider is that you will be competing with cheap labor from India and other foreign countries. If you really want to get into web programming/design, you will need to know most of the following: HTML, DHTML, XHTHM, XML, XSLT, ASP.NET, VB.NET, C#, Java, JavaScript, Graphics Design (Photoshop, etc…), Web Services, SOAP, AJAX, OOP (Object Oriented Programming), and SQL (TRANSACT and PL/SQL). I would start with HTML and XML, then go from there. The two leading technologies appear to be .NET and Java but the two are generally mutually exclusive.

A web designer able to work for giants such as microsoft, yahoo or google. And if you could give details on the job of the web designer…. what does it consist of?…what the web designer should do or know?
In as much details as possible.

Choice is up to you totally. There are many technical things following a specific web designing course. If you see in accordance with today’s technology go for the following sequence:

1. HTML & CSS //for designing
2. php
3. ASP.NET
4. Javascript
5. AJAX
6. Flash

If you have good strength in any two of these technologies you’re considered a good web designer :) … stay awesome!

I’m in California, and would like to stay here. I’ve looked into Graphic Design as a major [but I am a terrible drawer; I just don't know what else would work when you want to be a web designer]. I also considered the local community college’s Comp. Science course, because it has an emphasis on wed development.

I’m open to suggestions, advice, help, ANYTHING. Thank you (:

I’ve considered going into web design. I know HTML, XHTML, and CSS. However, that’s not enough today. Websites are dynamic and you need to know a lot of language. Check out w3schools.com as a reference.

As far as schools go, if you really want a job in web design where you will make any money you’d be better off getting a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. There aren’t really any schools that offer a program for web design (except tech schools that aren’t really worth it because you won’t find a job).

If you are good at math go to school for Computer Science. Otherwise, I would consider thinking about other career options.

Why do you want to get into Web Design? Do you like writing about anything in particular? Maybe majoring in something you’re interested in and play to that strength. You could get hired as a writer for a website later on.

If you’re an experienced web designer how long would it take you to make a website if the customer already had the css and index.html but just needed 3-5 more linking pages, one of which would be a contact us form?

About an hour or two depending on the quality ofthe template

I have JUST decided that I want to become a Web Designer/Developer.
I already have a good idea of what I need to do but I need reassurance from the yahoo answers community.
If you can list any tips or things I should know I will appreciate it very much.
Thanks!

Adobe are giving away their Flex application to students.

There are lots of good video tutorials on Flex and Flash.
You could watch a tutorial and make a decision after that.

Here is one such site: http://www.lynda.com/

We need a web designer who can add video log and event calendar. Also who can make it simple.

Depending on skill and experience (and, to some extent, location), $35/hour-$150/hour. (The more skilled the developer, and the more experiences/he has, the faster the job will get done.)
