I am doing some consulting marketing for a family member and they want to have a website that they can easily customize when necessary. Two website services that caught my eye were Homestead.com and Yahoo.com. Both of them provide templates to build websites off of, both have simple software for design purposes, and both seem to offer e-mail and domain names. Although I could personally use website design software like Dreamweaver, I want my family member to be able to make simple changes without my help, thus why I am interested in one of these sites compared to other web hosting sites like GoDaddy.com.
Of these two that have templates and web design software, who would you choose? Please provide a little comparison to justify your recommendation.

I am not a beginner in photoshop or flash but I do need some good book which can help me create some web site mock-ups. Please suggest any good book which has plenty of web template mockups. Thank You!!

Well most people don’t use books. They use video tutorials by Lynda.com and Total Training or VTC. I imagine there are still books like "Wow" for photoshop or Photoshop for dummies but the video tutorials are really much easier to learn from since you can easily work alongside them.

Heh…I made a template design that can be used on a site by altering the images of a bunch of hot women till you can’t tell the images I used were originally pics of women. Do you think I would be sending out subliminal messages by using it? That was the motive, to have some geek on a computer thinking, "Oh, I don’t know what it is about this site, but it’s turning me on."

I think your question should be put in the Psychology column.

Short answer: there is no such thing as subliminal messaging. Advertising and such are meant to create conscious reactions to buy their product, so trying to induce conscious reactions with unconscious stimulus is contradictory in itself. Even so, if subliminal messaging is truly subliminal, we would have no idea of it even existing nor its effects, which is a waste of time.

There are a lot of studies showing that "subliminal messaging" does not work. If you’re trying to get somebody horny, just post pictures of naked women.

I want to pay for original custom web design work only – no templates. Moreover, I don’t want to pay more than $25 a month for hosting and maintanance afterwards but I would like the same professional to do this. To be perfectly clear, I would like a serious full time professional with a solid portfolio to do this. I need direct contact and personal attention. I have digital photos and brochures for the designer to draw from.

Note: I build homes, but this does not mean that I would like to be ripped for all I am worth. I had a local studio offer to do this for $12,000 and $300 a month afterwards for hosting and maintenance. I am sure that adding two or three photos every month would not cost this much.

What would a serious professional web designer in Ontario charge for a job like this?

Ashley, if I wanted a template I could buy one for $50 and then I would not need a professional to tailor my website. How do you know that deciccohomes.ca is based on a template?

Why not get more quotes? I doubt you hire anyone else with just one quote. The first quote you have looks a little high unless the $300 includes more than just hosting.

I want to find a web design template that allows for a user network where people can sign in and share photos with eachother. Preferably in "What you see is what you get format", WYSIWYG, format.

Having just a template won’t do a thing. You have to know programming, design, and how to maintain (both web traffic and updates)/secure. Its called a social network.
