how hard is it to get a job in web design?
07.October, 2009
I’m currently studying at uni in my 3rd yr and doing a work placement. so its important I know what i want to do later on so i can get hands on experience now. i know a bit of programming, more than your average whizz kid. i don’t really like major programming but i still learn it cos i’ll need it no matter what.
however i’ve heard that a career in computer programming is useless as new languages are developed evryday, and what i learn and get loads of experience in today will be useless tomorrow.
I love designing software and GUI and i have a bit of experience in web template design so i thought a career in web design would be better suited to me.
But i what i want to know is a career in web design worthwhile, what is the supply of jobs available as opposed to the demand for the them, and is this sort of career short term?
sorry for the long explanation
It’s not an easy job to get right now because everyone thinks they can do it. If it is something you are really interested in you should be taking computer art classes along with your programming classes.
Web Template design guide.?
03.October, 2009
I need help with how to make a web template design. I know HTML and CSS. I can use Dreamweaver and I have a host. I just want to find out how to make my own template. I have been searching the web for a decent guide but found none. Can someone please point me in the right direction.
If you know html and css then you need to understand the guidelines for these languages.
To make sure that there are standards for programming websites online a bunch of different groups gathered to create the w3c
http://www.w3.org/
To create templates you should follow the standards based guidelines of this group and all your work will still be usable for years to come. Every page made outside of these standards is simply corrected by browsers today, if browsers stop fixing these mistakes then its likely your page won’t render right on the web of tomorrow.
I want to make a background image by adding text and changing the view and the angles of a picture; but I don’t know which program should I have. Can you please help me?
Try Dreamweaver or photoshop or else you may contact a template designer at website like http://definitivelab.com/ .

HI….Boy, Oh, Boy!!! Personally, I am so delighted that you asked this very question….for it has "bugged" me all these past dozen years or more that I have been creating and publishing hundreds of web pages…all over the internet…and all for FREE.
Initially, I was extremely fortunate to have Gini Pederson, (Professional Computer Teacher at the S.D. Comm. College District…..at the Aero Drive Campus) as my instructor, in several Computer subjects…..especially basic HTML. that really intrigued me, no end.
Seeing items come alive, simply by typing some HTML code, is like magic to me….and I still have not gotten over this wonderful feeling of being the actual CREATOR of whatever I type on and for a Web Page.
However, due to my present debillatating illness, I can no longer attend class, physically, as I once did at every opportunity in the past. Still, simply using basic HTML and some copy & paste of JavaScript….I continue producing a web page, one a week on average.
Now, thanks to your timely question, I am inspired to delve into the very subject of TEMPLATES……and as often as I can, from this day forward, I will further my study and usage of TEMPLATES for WEB PAGES…..WHICH WILL GIVE MY PRODUCTION A PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE, AT LONG LAST.
I will keep in touch with you and others on this great message board, and see how high we can climb the ladder of success.
Thanks, once again, for your question.

Also, what are the steps?
ALSO WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO DESIGNING THE WEBSITE???
If you currently are a web subscriber, your current provider offers a homepage into which you can FTP your current webpage(s) [which can be authored/designed using Composer [an authoring tool which is free when using Netscape browser], NotePad, MSN Word, FrontPage, DreamWeaver, etc.] and use the homepage hosting services. In a sense, you are hosting a commercial webpage via the homepage link and incurring merely the monthly access of, say, AOL.com, etc. Nevertheless, should you want to link your current domain name to the homepage URL, you’ll need to use a third-party redirection service, i.e., mydomain.com [which is free] or simply direct your domain name registry, i.e., godaddy.com to forward your domain name [with masking] to the link it to your homepage URL. It’s that simple.
Good luck!

I am a graphic designer and I am trying to make a web site for my portfolio. I have designed templates in adobe Illustrator.. what is the next step I need to take? I’ve been reading books about web sites.. but I am lost.. Do I need to export it photoshop and slice into pieces?
The easiest way for a novice to build a web site is to start with a web template. Web Templates can be customized and you can use the layout but swap the graphics etc…. this will get you comfortable with basic HTML design and an HTML editor (like Dreamweaver).
Here are some resources for free or inexpensive templates that are easy to edit and manage.

Web Design Methods – Using Templates?
18.September, 2009
Hello,
I understand that it is a good idea to separate ‘layout’ ‘content’ and ‘logic’ when building web applications. It seems a template system is ideal for seperating the layout. I want a graphic designer to design the page layout without needing PHP to build the page.
However, in the Smarty templates I have looked at, there seems to be a lot of Logic! (Isn’t this just shifting the problem?)
Essentially, is there a way to edit a simple html file for layout, while keeping content and logic separate?
This separation you mention is covered in the MVC (Model View Controller) design pattern.
It isn’t so much of separating logic, but "business logic". Presentation logic will always be part of the "View" or "Layout", either directly or through templates.
For most web sites, there isn’t a lot of business logic (or the controller part). There is however plenty of presentation logic. For smarter sites nowadays, you get some implemented in Javascript, and some in a server side language.
If you want your layout to be done in static html, and still have dynamic content, you’re limited to Javasctipt and AJAX. Not a good way to go about it. You can use PHP and still have everything separated. you just use "include" directive to include all yout logic and possibly content in your layout files.
Look at Wordpress. The template system it uses is pretty simple. Your content stays in a database, you have templates, that set the layout, and can include logic from external files.
