Trusted web hosting and reviews?
17.October, 2009
Hi, I’ve been doing a bit of research into good web hosting sites and found quite a few reviews and things like that, but are they to be trusted? Almost all the ones I read lead me to hostmonster or justhost. Are these to be trusted? Justhost doesn’t want you to leave the page and gives you some fake thing about an agent you can talk to about cheaper prices that seems a bit dodgy, but they are rated #1 on loads of sites. Any suggestions?
I’m looking for a cheap hosting site that I can have www."sitename".com or perhaps .co.uk ending.
The website will be used to be an online gallery of my designs, flash animations and short films, so unlimited space would be useful
Thanks.
Most hosting review sites cannot be trusted. Thats because they are paid a commission to refer customers to a particular host or hosts, therefore all the reviews are slanted toward hosts that pay them the most.
One site that does NOT slant their ratings is http://www.hostingscorecard.com All ratings are based on a minumum of 1000 public reviews/comments over the last 6 months and sites are not excluded because they don’t pay commission.
The process of how hosts are rated and selected is fully disclosed at http://www.hostingscorecard.com/how.html
The field is full of sites that are perfectly willing to lie to you in order to obtain a commission. http://www.hostingscorecard.com will not give bad advice in exchange for money. If a site is rated high on http://hostingscorecard.com it means that the site has a good reputation on the web

I agree with i_am_fava 100%
You must also remember that customers with no problems don’t moan, customers who do have problems moan a great deal. This is why you must make up your own mind and do not be afraid to move if you are not satisfied with service.
I would never recommend a free Hoster, they are utter rubbish. I will also never recommend any Hoster that forces you to add adverts or links into your pages.
There is a saying that "you get what you pay for", and in hosting world that’s completely NOT true. I use HostGator (#10 on that list that i_am_fava posted) and I’m on a platinum service. I’m so happy I have 2 paid accounts. However there are people who don’t like them at all and have had very bad experiences. It all depends on personal circumstances, what you are hosting, and what you actually expect to get out of it.
Good luck. It’s great fun hosting your own sites BTW.

There are a lot of hosting companies but about of dozen or so really large ones. Both Hostmonster and Justhost are among those.
I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/
Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

Hosting review sites get paid for each person that signs up for hosting. They tend to send people to the ones they get paid more by.
First try to find host who has servers in uk this helps with Seo same goes for domain name.
Second look for one that lets you upgrade anytime you need to to a larger package. This way if site needs more space or transfer you can just change plans.
I like ones that have script installation and website builders. Makes it easier and faster than making sites and downloading them.
If you sell online try using site that uses payment service you do. Example would be paypal.
