Will downloading this program give me a virus?
13.December, 2009
I am way into web design, it’s my hobby.
I downloaded a few fonts and they have to be unzipped. :[
To unzip them, I have to use the program WinZip. Even though it is an "award winning" program [that's what the website says], will it still give me a virus from downloading the trial? That usually happens with other programs but still.. the "award winning-ness" is making me ask the question. Please help! Thanks. ![]()
winzip will not give you a virus, however if the file you unzip has a virus in it you could get infected.

I have downloaded and used winzip for years…so I would say no
You can always scan the program before you install it.

Macey, how can you get way into web design and not know one of the most popular, professional compression programs. Before it was called WinZip, it was called simply Zip. It is the original Zip that EVERYBODY uses.
If you download it direct from their website, or from TuCows or Download.com, you’re absolutely safe. In any case, I didn’t think TuCows or Download.com HAD any viruses downloadable. I think they scan all their download for viruses to protect visitors to their websites. So, just make sure you download it from a reputable source. In fact, you should go ahead and buy a paid copy.
Your biggest risk of viruses is from fly-by-night download websites, not from reputable websites.
