What are the steps to become a Web Designer/Developer?

I have JUST decided that I want to become a Web Designer/Developer.
I already have a good idea of what I need to do but I need reassurance from the yahoo answers community.
If you can list any tips or things I should know I will appreciate it very much.

Adobe are giving away their Flex application to students.

There are lots of good video tutorials on Flex and Flash.
You could watch a tutorial and make a decision after that.
