I am starting a web design business and am going to register my domain name. I have been told that I should have the words "webdesign" in my domain name.

For example, if my design company will be called "Blue Monkey", I’m told my main domain name should be "bluemonkeywebdesign.com" rather than just "bluemonkey.com"

Does anyone agree or disagree with this thinking? I was all set to just buy the domain name without the "webdesign" part because I thought the shorter it is, the better it is.

Any thoughts?

Same here, short and sweet. People giving you that advice should stop reading articles from 1995.

The common way of thinking is that short is better. The longer it is, the more your customers have to type out and remember. Technically, when thinking in terms of SEO and such, the webdesign in the domain name *may* help, however the gains in SEO compared to the loss in customers due to laziness is far to much for someone like myself to consider it.

Basically, My opinion is to keep it short and sweet.

Agreed. Keep it short and memorable. Having the term "web design" in your domain name really doesn’t add much for SEO.

Coming up with a memorable name is probably the most important. You don’t need web design in your domain name, but you do need to use the keywords of web design in your web content and in some of your page titles. Do a little research with the Google Keyword Tool https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal to see which words are searched for most often in the web design area and then use them on your web pages. Also, domain names are so cheap that there is no reason why you could not also get bluemonkeywebdesign.com and point that domain name to your site as well. Will only cost you $9.95 a year or so…after a year, you can decide whose right !!!
